*Bone Density Screening
Bone density screening is highly recommended for early detection of osteoporosis.
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a gradual thinning and weakening of bones, which can lead to bone fractures. Over 28 million Americans, 80% of whom are women, have or are at risk of developing this condition. Since osteoporosis is often referred to as a “silent disease,” many are less likely to find out they have it until they suffer a painful fracture. Osteoporosis can’t be reversed, but early detection may prevent further deterioration of the bone along with changes in diet, exercise habits and/or medication.
More information is available at The National Osteoporosis Foundation.
Osteoporosis Risk Factors:
• Female and older than age 50
• Family history of fracture
• Early menopause
• Diet low in calcium
• Thin and small framed
Are you at risk or worried about Osteoporosis?
Family Health West’s Imaging Center offers one simple and painless test that can help. Our Lunar Prodigy Bone Densitometer determines your risk of developing osteoporosis and if necessary, we can suggest guidelines to help you prevent a fracture. Our Densitometer measures the density of the spine, hip and other bones which are the most frequent sites of fracture.

*Digital Mammography
Digital Mammography, also called full-field digital mammography (FFDM), is a mammography system in which the x-ray film is replaced by solid-state detectors that convert x-rays into electrical signals. These detectors are similar to those found in digital cameras. The electrical signals are used to produce images of the breast that can be seen on a computer screen or printed on special film similar to conventional mammograms. From the patient's point of view, having a digital mammogram is essentially the same as having a conventional film screen mammogram.
Screening mammography provides a better tool for early detection of breast cancer. It can detect an abnormality long before it can be felt. The results of your screening mammogram will be sent to you and your doctor within a week.
Occasionally, the radiologist requires additional images of a particular area by ultrasound or x-ray images, which give a better view of different angles of an area of tissue. When additional tests are needed, we will schedule your next test as quickly as possible. You will get the results of these additional tests the same day, before you leave the Imaging Center.
